"Alaskan Aurora " © Original: 36" x 48" Acrylic on canvas. Date1995.

The Aurora was painted in a response to time spent in Alaska watching this remarkable phenomenon. Sitting out in the cold nights of winter when the aurora manifests itself more brightly than any other time I had the experience of being embraced in a cathedral like experience. When I got back to the studio I added the alaskan salmon and fused the image with carp like markings. It enhances the oriental meditative approach to the fish and the cathedral experience but it also draws on the western themes of the philosophers stone or holy grail ...some kind of symbol of completeness.
