The owl in the painting appeared to me one night going for a walk in the mountains. It sat on a lamp standard watching me until finally I noticed it. We watched each other for a moment then it flew gracefully down the road I was on, gliding between the trees until out of sight. I took the mountains from an impressive South American range, however when I cast the image of the owl against an evening shadow the owl was transformed into the messenger. That is to say it took on a numinous quality, carrying messages from the unconscious into the light of awakening reason.
