On the site you'll find a variety of works rich in content. Ideas emerge from personality, family, society, education, the landscape, spirituality, the psychology of childhood and current developments in culture. In some cases creativity has emerged as a strategy for resolving internal issues. This is art as healing. At other times the art has acted as the management of current dynamics which rest upon a dysfunctional agenda. It is one way to cope. But wholeness is very evident too.

Other works relating to myth, archetype and universals make themselves felt, particularly when receptivity and meditation replace dysfunction. Each method holds to it's own particular power and beauty; and they are a journey. The complexities of the creative process may never be accurately defined. These things mentioned, however, are part of the underlying code where a search for values, perhaps absolutes has also been an abiding interest, an obsession.

Ideas often present themselves in layers. Some take years before interpretation becomes fully conscious. Like dialogue, something happens and at that precise moment there is often no complete clarity or comprehension of significance or consequence. These luxuries follow later. The process of life runs amidst changing thoughts; a process or stream of realizations. Different interpretations surface as age moves through its seasonal cycles.

Inspiration sometimes seems to be about consciousness, archetype and myth. There is no real proof. Faith acts in this area but reason looks to what science, philosophy and psychology think. For better or for worse, ideas seem to emerge from deep layers of thought. Deep layers of thought connect to something else. Science has it that we emerge from the background ‘noise’ of the particulate universe, so why not thought. It might be associated with the same process, the stuff which complexifies into consciousness. And then what should be done with it all? What do we add or take away from our world by our thoughts and deeds? What kind of deep ecology will we create?

In the articles about the world of art, their life and times along with their work is a passport for our enjoyment. The first article is about the English artist Joseph Mallord William Turner. It looks to the artists journey through life and speaks volumes about his inner world. An extract from this was published in a London monthly. A second part was presented to an association belonging to The National Gallery in Trafalgar Square.

Turner was influential. Church readily acknowledged his debt to him as did Rothko a century later. Both looked inward and both were challenged. Church was confronted by Darwin’s ‘Origin of the Species,’ published in 1859. Church’s idea of nature unfolding in harmony, directed by a creative divine force was shattered by ideas of competition and struggle described in Darwin’s work. Marcel Duchamp similarly exposes personal and social influences in times of great upheaval. His world looks to revolt and alienation. A recent post on Picasso looks to a similar profile where the artists personal biography cannot stand separately from his creativity.

I hope you enjoy the current articles on these great artists. In the future plans exist to cover Picasso (now complete) the Japanese garden, Mark Rothko, the Renaissance and more. A disc is already available on the history and development of the Renaissance.

NEW! Aesthetics: a philosophy of art / presented on 21st August

Presenter; Derek Dey, BA, MA, - artist educator author

Presented as a slide show, the philosophy of art journeys through art, history, philosophy, psychology, and questions concerning consciousness and the creative process. This introduction was presented to a small but interesting audience and work continues on the promotion and development of Aesthetics. The psychology of creativity has been further developed running from Freud and Jung into the history and development of both streams of thinking towards Hagman, Lachman, Beebe, Slavin and Kriegman. The creative unconscious now seems to be upheld by both Freudian's and Jungian's although there are still some wrinkles to be worked through.
